Volcanoes

Volcanic Activity

The country of Vietnam does have volcanoes with 2 being Holocene and 9 of them being Pleistocene. Even though the country may have volcanoes its hazard risk is actually very low since there has been no report about an eruption happening in recent years. The last eruption to happen in Vietnam  was due to the Iles des Cendres volcano which erupted on March 2 1923 CE and lasted up till May 13 1923 CE with a VEI of 2. The rock type of this last volcanic eruption consisted of Basalt/Picro-Basalt rocks and location of the volcano was on the Intraplate as well as it being (>25km) of the continental crust.  Not only that but the Iles des Cendres is actually a group of submarine volcanoes that are located on the South East coast of Vietnam and the volcanoes responsible for the eruption in 1923 CE where two submarine lava cones which during the eruption made ephemeral islands. Even though there hasn't been volcanic activity in years and the country is at low risk of having an eruption I still believe that there should be a plane made in case because one can never know. Currently my country has no mitigation plans in case of a volcanic eruption but some things they can do in this situation is to move machinery and vehicles under something or cover them with tarps if ash is forecasted to fall. The main thing would also be to stay indoors when ash is falling and to close all windows/entrances to one's home. On the other hand where ever volcanos are located in the country the country can create an evacuation plan for the neighboring cities near those volcanoes and make hazard zone maps.

  1. Hi Erica! Great blog post. That is insane that Vietnam has volcanoes but still no plan in place for when there is an eruption. It is also very neat that your country has submarine lava cones! Rwanda couldn't be more different: there is an agency put into place to handle all of the natural disasters that Rwanda may face and they also have a revamped Red Cross prepared for emergencies. Vietnam should think twice!

  2. Hello Erica, I think it is so interesting how volcanoes have happened so far back in history and how there is a low threat of them happening now. It makes you wonder if there is an earthquake or some other earth shaking event, if it could wake up those sleeping volcanoes. I think that there should be volcano procedures in place just in case. Like you said, you never know. Thanks for the blog..
