Final Hazard Report

Image
Vietnam's Hazard Report      After researching on the country of Vietnam and learning about the many hazards the country experiences there are a few key hazards that are considered as the most hazardous. These very hazards consist of coastal erosion and landslides. The reason for choosing these two specific hazards is due to the fact that other hazards take a part in these two hazards happening often. The main reason for landslides happening continuously is because of certain places like mountainous regions getting heavy rainfall that lasts for weeks which weakens the sediment. As for coastal erosion it happens due to the constant crashing of waves as well as tropical cyclones which consist of 60% of Vietnam's storms which affect the marine zone. These two events are also the reason why many people lose their lives throughout the years.      Not only that but the reason why the country experiences such things in general is due to the location of the country...

Coastal Hazards

Image
Hazard In the country of Vietnam every year waves have been gradually destryoing 3-4 meters of land. Not only that but due to this every year at least 80-90 houses get washed away. The reason as to why the country is experiencing such high erosion rates is because of the increase on urbanization, economic growth, as well as climate change. Even with such risks happening in the coast of Vietnam that is where economic sectors are hosted such as tourism, industry, and aquaculture which work as a way to help the socioeconomic development in the country. It has been told that more than 50% of eroded areas in the country are more than 1km in length and 10.6% of the coast has gone 200m or more inland which just shows how bad it is in the central coastline excluding the north/south parts. Another major factor for such a thing happening in Vietnam is due to the tropical cyclones that are 60% of storms that affect Vietnam's marine zone. As for human factors that affect the erosion happening ...

Extreme Weather

Image
Type of Weather   In Vietnam their thunderstorm season begins during the months of April-October. As for the average amount of days that the country experiences thunderstorms are 100 days a year which is 250 hours a year. Not only that but there is a difference in thunderstorm activities depending on the region. The reason for the activity being different in each region is due to such things as territorial division by mountains with different aspects, which actually strengthen the activity in a region but limits others. The thunderous regions also have sharp atmospheric disturbance and favorable terrain for the formation of  các dòng thăng. Aside from that because of these thunderstorms happening in the country they also experience around 2 million lightning strikes the ground per year. It has been recorded in 2004, that 820 lightning accidents had happened over ten years and caused millions of  Vietnamese dong which is Vietnam's currency in damages as well as...

Mass Waste Hazards

Image
Mass Wasting Vietnam as a whole is regarded as a high risk country when it comes to experiencing landslides. The reason for the country being at such high risk is due to rainfall patterns, geology, soil, land cover and earthquakes that are bound to happen that cause these landslides to happen in the country frequently. Not only that but in the Mountainous regions of Vietnam have experienced rainfall in just the past year of 2023 on August 2nd in which the country had heavy rainfall that lasted for many weeks. Due to the amount of rainfall this resulted in landslides occurring as well as floods. The event was monitored by (DG ECHO) which stands for the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Civil Aid Operations. They were keeping an eye on the Red Cross if they needed anymore assistance. Furthermore because of this disaster it resulted in 30,000 people being affected by it and 2,940 citizens being displaced from their house and to shelters in ares that are ...

Volcanoes

Image
Volcanic Activity The country of Vietnam does have volcanoes with 2 being Holocene and 9 of them being Pleistocene. Even though the country may have volcanoes its hazard risk is actually very low since there has been no report about an eruption happening in recent years. The last eruption to happen in Vietnam  was due to the Iles des Cendres volcano which erupted on March 2 1923 CE and lasted up till May 13 1923 CE with a VEI of 2. The rock type of this last volcanic eruption consisted of Basalt/Picro-Basalt rocks and location of the volcano was on the Intraplate as well as it being (>25km) of the continental crust.  Not only that but the Iles des Cendres is actually a group of submarine volcanoes that are located on the South East coast of Vietnam and the volcanoes responsible for the eruption in 1923 CE where two submarine lava cones which during the eruption made ephemeral islands. Even though there hasn't been volcanic activity in years and the country is...

Earthquakes

Image
Vietnam's Seismic Acitivy On the case of earthquakes and where they are located the country of Vietnam shown on a seismic map provided by Think hazard shows Vietnam to be a medium hazard country. With the country being a medium hazardous place it means that there is a 10% chance of destructive earthquakes to hit the country in the next 50 years. The percentage is not high since as said in the previous post Vietnam's closest plate is the Eurasian plate which isn't that close to the country which is probably why the country doesn't face such intense Earthquakes. In the light orange spots the country faces low hazard quaked while the darker orange spots face medium hazard quakes. For the majority Vietnam faces around 12 earthquakes yearly with them having a magnitude of 4 with a few above that magnitude. Also in the past 10 years the strongest one Vietnam had is one with the magnitude of 6.2.  What the country does in the case of such disasters like quakes to prepare the...

Tectonic Plate Boundaries

Image
Surrounding Plates The closest plate located near Vietnam is the Eurasian Plate. Not only that but below the country the Indo-Australian Plate lies there not too far from Vietnam but also not too close. As for the Northern part of Vietnam it is on the Sudan Plate as most of Southeast Asia is. From what I found in my research is that Vietnam has divergent as well as convergent-collision boundaries. What this means is that for divergent it is mostly focused on earthquakes which Vietnam experiences low to medium amounts of quakes. These earthquakes that happen in the country don't go higher than a magnitude of 5 and the biggest earthquake that the country has experienced was in Dien Bien in 1935 and one in 1983 that ranged from a magnitude of between 6 to 7. As for convergent-collision boundaries it ties in with the country since Vietnam mostly experiences floods and typhoons which destroys crops and affects people due to the destruction of homes. These large events happen because of ...
