Extreme Weather

 Type of Weather

In Vietnam their thunderstorm season begins during the months of April-October. As for the average amount of days that the country experiences thunderstorms are 100 days a year which is 250 hours a year. Not only that but there is a difference in thunderstorm activities depending on the region. The reason for the activity being different in each region is due to such things as territorial division by mountains with different aspects, which actually strengthen the activity in a region but limits others. The thunderous regions also have sharp atmospheric disturbance and favorable terrain for the formation of các dòng thăng. Aside from that because of these thunderstorms happening in the country they also experience around 2 million lightning strikes the ground per year. It has been recorded in 2004, that 820 lightning accidents had happened over ten years and caused millions of Vietnamese dong which is Vietnam's currency in damages as well as interruption of telecommunications/electrical services. Since these lightning accidents happened it also resulted in damage to crops as well as peoples safety making it a problem for peoples living situation such as in regions like Co Dung which is in the northern province of Hai Duong, Son Loc, and the Mekong river delta. Not only that but thunderstorms have socio-economic consequences on agriculture because of flooding.

As for what Vietnam is doing for such weather is by doing things like the Women's Union in Da Nang is administrating a loan in which it will help making people's homes resistant to storms. This very initiative of building storm resistant homes has helped hundreds of low income household to be able and repair as well as rebuild their homes. Not only that but on October 3,2023 an early warning system was launched for thunderstorms, lightning, and floods by the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration at the 78th anniversary of the sector in Hanoi. This system automatically combines data collected from many weather stations and provides an early informational forecast of dangerous meteorological and weather phenomena that will impact the community. Aside from that the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration and the Air Traffic Management Corporation had signed a cooperation agreement in which both would work together to complete and promote law enforcement in meteorological and hydrological activities, improve weather forecast for quality flying zones, and to set up a communication/support device in case of natural disasters.

  1. Hey, good job. The facts about there being 100 days and 250 hours of thunderstorms is wild and crazy. Then in addition to the affect it has on the currency and the accidents that have occurred over the last ten years is crazy.
