Mass Waste Hazards
Mass Wasting
Vietnam as a whole is regarded as a high risk country when it comes to experiencing landslides. The reason for the country being at such high risk is due to rainfall patterns, geology, soil, land cover and earthquakes that are bound to happen that cause these landslides to happen in the country frequently. Not only that but in the Mountainous regions of Vietnam have experienced rainfall in just the past year of 2023 on August 2nd in which the country had heavy rainfall that lasted for many weeks. Due to the amount of rainfall this resulted in landslides occurring as well as floods. The event was monitored by (DG ECHO) which stands for the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Civil Aid Operations. They were keeping an eye on the Red Cross if they needed anymore assistance. Furthermore because of this disaster it resulted in 30,000 people being affected by it and 2,940 citizens being displaced from their house and to shelters in ares that are safe. Another impactful event in regards to mass wasting took place on October 12, 2020 when the Central Vietnam was experiencing landslides due to rainfall it resulted in a hydroelectric plant being struck by a mudslide made 17 laborers go missing which resulted in a rescue team of 21 people to go and help out. On the way since the plant was 10km away from the main road reaching the spot was challenging even more since paths were blocked by continuing landslides happening. So from this information collected by my research I discovered that another landslide can happen in the same area again. This is because in the location that the rescuers were in another landslide happened in which 13 of the members were buried under the debris. This just consists some of the mass wasting that Vietnam has experienced and the events that happened with it.
As for what Vietnam is doing to mitigate this disaster is by creating a landslide susceptibility map that will be divided in 4 classes from low to high in terms of sensitivity. This map will help in forecasting as well as preventing/mitigating in a region of the country. Not only that but Vietnam's Meteorological and Hydrological Administration will cooperate with certain units to send personnel to landslide hit areas and places of high risk in the Central Highlands. Not only that but they intend on doing large-scale studies on landslides, tube floods, and flash floods. Not only that but socio-economic development orientations are said to happen to prevent and minimize damage caused by such a disaster on the citizens homes and their lives. Lastly Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had asked to ministries, localities, and agencies to continue strictly to implement official dispatch No. 607 /CD-TTg on natural disasters prevention and control during rainy season in the country.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about your country. Our countries, Vietnam and France, are similar by the fact that landslides are very common! It seems that when a mountainous country experiences heavy rainfall landslides usually always happen, especially if the soil is already loose!
ReplyDeleteHello Erica, I really enjoyed reading your findings! My country, Lebanon, also has a high risk to landslides due to it's terrain and rainfall. Great work!
ReplyDeleteGreetings Erica; your blog was very well laid out and detailed. I really enjoyed reading all the insightful information you presented. It was also interesting to read about what Vietnam is doing to mitigate this potential disaster! Excellent work!
