Coastal Hazards

Hazard

In the country of Vietnam every year waves have been gradually destryoing 3-4 meters of land. Not only that but due to this every year at least 80-90 houses get washed away. The reason as to why the country is experiencing such high erosion rates is because of the increase on urbanization, economic growth, as well as climate change. Even with such risks happening in the coast of Vietnam that is where economic sectors are hosted such as tourism, industry, and aquaculture which work as a way to help the socioeconomic development in the country. It has been told that more than 50% of eroded areas in the country are more than 1km in length and 10.6% of the coast has gone 200m or more inland which just shows how bad it is in the central coastline excluding the north/south parts. Another major factor for such a thing happening in Vietnam is due to the tropical cyclones that are 60% of storms that affect Vietnam's marine zone. As for human factors that affect the erosion happening in the country include deforestation of mangrove's since it reduces that way in which how they minimize wind storms and waves, other things include embankment, upstream irrigation, and mining.

On the other hand what the country can do to mitigate the problem is to add either permanent or soft structures. These structures include dykes, geotubes, or wave/wind breaking plants. One major thing that the country can do which I think is most important is to raise awareness to their citizens about the hazards of natural disasters. This includes the major reasons as to why erosion is happening as well as the rate in which its happening. Something else would be to not build homes anymore in these areas to reduce building damages and people having to be relocated which costs a lot to do. One other thing would be to have accessible databases with detailed information on the hazards and risk as well as having an upgraded early warning system so that people can be prepared in advanced. Overall though this explains the coastal hazard that Vietnam experiences.

  3. Well done Erica! I enjoyed your blog a lot. I thought you did a very good job highlighting that urbanization, climate change and economic growth are the main factors in Vietnam's coastal hazards. Also, I liked that you included ways to attack the problem and mitigate the risks or coastal hazards in Vietnam I hope these solutions are implemented in the near future!

  5. Hello. It is very upsetting to see that many houses get washed away on the coast. Although this may be a common sense risk of living near the ocean it is very unfortunate and hopefully this financially is dealt with in the insurance aspect given the coastal living is expensive enough already.

  6. Hi Erica,
it was interesting reading about Vietnam's coastal erosion. The fact that 3 to 4 meters of land gets destroyed by waves every year is pretty crazy to me. Up to around 90 houses being washed away is pretty interesting too, although unfortunate for the families. Good job this week!
